Global Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Awarded in Partnership with World Health
Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – May 15, 2017 – Centinela Hospital Medical Center today announced that it has received prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility from Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., a global program sponsored by the World Health Organizations (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

More than two decades of research has established numerous advantages to breastfeeding for both mother and baby. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the Baby-Friendly Designation recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies following birth and discharge. With this designation, Centinela Hospital Medical Center now is only one of 34 Baby-Friendly hospitals within Los Angeles County.

“We are extremely proud of the work our OB team has put into this process of formalizing the Baby-Friendly designation as a resource for moms within this community,” said Vicki Clark, Director of Maternal Services, Centinela Hospital Medical Center. “This remarkable milestone is the result of four years of planning and action, with the support of First 5 LA, to ensure that Los Angeles-area moms and their babies are off to a healthy start.”

Currently, there are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide and 427 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States. The “Baby-Friendly” designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The evidence-based practices designated hospitals and facilities must demonstrate range from helping mothers’ initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth, to providing breastfeeding education vehicles following discharge. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstration by quality processes.

"Centinela Hospital has been serving this community for more than nine decades, and we can proudly state that thousands of babies have been born here in Inglewood, a tradition we plan to continue,” added Linda Bradley, CEO of Centinela Hospital Medical Center. “We just broke ground on our new Labor & Delivery Unit, which is scheduled to open next year. As a Baby-Friendly hospital, our staff will cotinine to provide early support and information to parents to create an environment that enhances parent-child attachment.”

Centinela Hospital’s dedication to the community it serves is evident by its $100 million capital expansion and renovation plans. In May 2016, Centinela completed a $55 million seismic retrofit project that included the unveiling of a new hospital front entrance, lobby, admitting department, laboratory, gift shop, and administration offices. In March 2017, it opened its newly expanded emergency room that includes 10,000 square feet of additional space to increase the number of emergency room beds to 52. Further remodeling and expansion projects under construction include: more emergency department upgrades, maternal services and labor & delivery, radiology, hybrid cath lab, and pharmacy facilities.
