Respiratory care is an allied health specialty concerned with the treatment, management, control and care of a person’s breathing. Respiratory care therapists provide relief to those who have difficulty breathing or cannot breathe on their own due to impaired or non-functioning lungs. Typical patients of respiratory care therapists may include patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, lung cancer, stroke, drowning accidents, heart attacks, birth defects, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, or sleep apnea. Patients recovering from surgery are also treated by respiratory therapists.

Our Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) are licensed as Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) or registry eligible by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and licensed by the State of California. Our RCP’s are specialists in the use of therapeutic and evaluation techniques in respiratory care. They are trained to aid physicians in the evaluation, diagnosis, and care of patients with cardiopulmonary problems.

Centinela Hospital’s respiratory therapy program applies scientific principles to prevent, identify and treat acute or chronic issues of the cardiopulmonary system. Our therapists have knowledge of the scientific principles underlying cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, as well as biomedical engineering and technology that enables them to effectively assess, educate and treat patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. Our RCP’s are trained as “physician-extenders” and are a very important part of the healthcare team. They are patient care managers who not only determine the need for respiratory care services but actually administer that care directly to our patients.
